New Medical Board Rules Effective April 30

Initial Review of Proposed Rules - Comments Due May 10


The Board is seeking comments during the initial review of the following proposed rules: Respiratory Care rules for licensure, supervision of limited permit holders, continuing education, and providing information to the Medical Board


The Medical Board’s initial review of rules may result in a proposal to amend current rules, rescind current rules, make no changes to current rules, and/or adopt new rules. Comments received will be reviewed and possibly result in changes to the initially proposed language before the rules are filed with the Common Sense Initiative Office.

Comments on the rule should be submitted no later than the deadline to both the Medical Board (Sallie.Debolt@med.ohio.gov) and the Common Sense Initiative Office (CSIPublicComments@governor.ohio.gov). 



2019 J-1 Visa Waiver Program Is Open for Primary Care and Behavioral Health Placements


The Ohio Department of Health participates in the State 30 Program to increase access to health care services for Ohio’s underserved populations.
J-1 visa waivers allow foreign medical graduates to remain in the United States after completing residency/fellowship training in exchange for a three-year commitment to provide health care services in underserved areas.

Potential sponsors for the third application cycle for the 2019 program year should complete and submit the Notice of Intent to Apply form as soon as possible. Applications must be postmarked by June 30. The application cycle may close prior to June 30 if all slots have been filled. Please note that there are approximately six slots available in this application cycle.

July 1 Renewal Deadline


Physicians, podiatrists, massage therapists and cosmetic therapists with a last name beginning with A or B must renew their licenses by July 1. If your license is not renewed by that date, your license expires and you must cease practicing. Physicians with an expired license will be unable to log on to OARRS. 
All license renewals are processed online through elicense.ohio.gov. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. Renewed licenses will be valid until July 1, 2021.

The Ohio Substance Abuse Monitoring (OSAM) Network announces the release of its most recent Drug Trend Report: Surveillance of Drug Abuse Trends in the State of Ohio: January – June 2018. It is available on the OhioMHAS website or by clicking the link below. 
ohio medical marijuana control program update

In January, Ohio dispensaries began selling medical marijuana to patients and caregivers. To date, there are 15 dispensaries operating. Total product sales through April 28 is $5.2 million with 673 pounds of plant material and 2,544 units of manufactured product.


As of March 31, the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program reports:

  • 469 Physicians with Certificates to Recommend (CTR)
  • 28,275 Recommendations
  • 24,556 Registered patients with recommendations
    • 1,947 Patients with Veteran Status
    • 895 Patients with Indigent Status
    • 128 Patients with a Terminal Diagnosis
  • 9,855 Unique patients who purchased medical marijuana (as reported to OARRS by licensed dispensaries)
  • 1,489 Registered Caregivers

Cosmetic Therapy Exam - July 9
The next CT exam is scheduled for Tuesday, July 9. Cosmetic therapists have until June 24 at 5 p.m. to submit applications to the board. Applicants must be a graduate prior to the application deadline. Click here to apply.

MBLEx Fee to Increase April 2020
The Federation of State Massage Therapy Boards (FSMTB) is increasing the Massage & Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) fee from $195 to $265 beginning April 1, 2020. This is the first time in 13 years FSMTB has raised the fee for the examination. Click to learn more


Office Closure

The Medical Board’s office will be closed on Monday, May 27 in observance of the Memorial Day holiday. The office will reopen at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28.
