Updates & important information from the State Medical Board of Ohio

Monthly Formal Action reports include summary descriptions of the disciplinary actions initiated and the disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Medical Board at its monthly meeting. Reports also contain updated information regarding changes in probationary monitoring requirements, reinstatement of licenses following suspension, and status reports of cases on appeal through the courts.

Medical Board Hosts PA Compact Rules Committee

The State Medical Board of Ohio was happy to host the PA Compact Rules Committee in downtown Columbus. We are grateful to be involved in the development of this new pathway to licensure for physician assistants.

Medical Board Considers New Qualifying Condition
On February 12, the board’s Medical Marijuana Committee decided to move the petition for refractory autism spectrum disorder forward for expert review. 
 
Written public comment on this condition is accepted from now through February 28. Anyone may submit their comments by emailing MedicalMarijuana@med.ohio.gov.
 
The Medical Marijuana Committee will then review the subject matter expert(s) report and make a recommendation to the full board for a vote to adopt/deny the petition to add the qualifying conditions. The board is expected to make a final decision this summer.

Board of Pharmacy Launches Dashboard Tracking Pharmacy Trends Across State

This month, the Ohio Board of Pharmacy launched a new dashboard to track the status of pharmacies across the state and identify trends. The Ohio Pharmacy Access dashboard utilizes Board of Pharmacy licensing data to provide users with a visualization of where pharmacy openings and closures are occurring and offers insights into how closures are impacting access to pharmacy services in Ohio. ODH Seeking Nominees for Complex Medical Help Program's Medical Advisory Council

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is seeking nominees skilled in the needs and services related to caring for children and youth with special health care needs for the agency’s Complex Medical Help Program (CMH) Medical Advisory Council. The program was formerly known as Children With Medical Handicaps until a recent name change.  

 

The CMH Program links children and youth with special health care needs to a network of qualified providers and helps their families obtain payment for needed services, including serving as the payor of last resort for eligible clients. 

 

Medical and other relevant professionals who are interested in being considered for appointment to the CMH Program Medical Advisory Council should submit their CV and a short statement explaining their interest along with a brief synopsis of their relevant experience to BCMH@odh.ohio.gov by Monday, March 31. Please submit any questions to the above email address.

Ohio Physician Loan Repayment Program

The Ohio Physician Loan Repayment Program is open now through February 28, 2025. PDF applications will be available on the Ohio Department of Health's program page during the applications cycle. Any questions, regarding applications, can be directed to PCRH@odh.ohio.gov. Please include the nature of your request and specify the Ohio Physician Loan Repayment Program. 

RecoveryOhio's New Online Dashboard

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s RecoveryOhio initiative has launched a groundbreaking new online dashboard, designed to predict when communities may be at heightened risk for a spike in drug overdoses, so local leaders can take action in time to save lives. This first-of-its-kind tool uses a variety of data to pinpoint ZIP codes at increased risk for overdoses up to 30 days in advance.

 

Updated daily, the new dashboard offers dynamic, real-time insights into the evolving landscape of drug and overdose prevalence across the state. For FAQs and instructions on how to access the dashboard, visit: RecoveryOhio.gov/ODEarlyWarning.

Licensees Must Cooperate with a Board Investigation
Under the Ohio Revised Code, Medical Board licensees must cooperate in an investigation conducted by the board. For instance, a licensee may be subject to a subpoena and required to answer questions honestly during the course of a deposition presented by the board. Please note that failure to cooperate with a Medical Board investigation, including failure to appear for a deposition, is grounds for board discipline. Licensee Obligation to Complete Death Certificates
When an individual dies under natural causes the attending physician is to sign the death certificate within forty-eight hours after the death.
