Advisory Committee on Certified Mental Health Assistant Programs
The Medical Board is pleased to announce the formation of the Advisory Committee on Certified Mental Health Assistant Programs. The Certified Mental Health Assistant in a new license type that was created in Senate Bill 95 of the 135th General Assembly. The committee will advise the board and the Department of Higher Education regarding certified mental health assistant programs. We welcome the new members and thank them for their guidance as the Board works to implement the new license.

Monthly Formal Action reports include summary descriptions of the disciplinary actions initiated and the disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Medical Board at its monthly meeting. Reports also contain updated information regarding changes in probationary monitoring requirements, reinstatement of licenses following suspension, and status reports of cases on appeal through the courts.

Medical Board Rejects Petition for Autism for Medical Marijuana
At a committee meeting in May and at the full Board meeting in June, the State Medical Board reviewed a petition to add refractory autism spectrum disorder as a qualify medical condition for medical marijuana. After much discussion and consideration of expert recommendations, the Board voted to reject the petition for refractory autism spectrum disorder.
Under Ohio law, the following are qualifying medical conditions: AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, cachexia, cancer, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, Crohn’s disease, epilepsy or another seizure disorder, fibromyalgia, glaucoma, hepatitis C, Huntington’s disease, inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, multiple sclerosis, pain that is either chronic and severe or intractable, Parkinson’s disease, positive status for HIV, post-traumatic stress disorder, sickle cell anemia, Spasticity, spinal cord disease or injury, terminal illness, Tourette syndrome, traumatic brain injury, and ulcerative colitis.
The next submission period is scheduled for Nov. 1 – Dec. 31, 2025. Anyone may submit a petition requesting a condition be added to the OMMCP. If a condition has been previously rejected by the board, a petition must contain new scientific information that supports the request.

New Changes to the Medical Certification Process for CDL and CLP Holders
The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles - Office of Driver Services would like to share the following message, regarding medical certification (MECERT) submission changes.
Effective June 23, 2025, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will begin electronically transmitting examination results and variance information for Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) applicants and Commercial Driver's License (CDL) holders to the Ohio BMV. CLP applicants and CDL holders will no longer be required to submit a paper Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Due to the FMCSA's implementation of these significant changes to the medical certification process for Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) drivers, Ohio will only be able to post examination results and variance information received electronically from FMCSA. Paper copies of medical certificates will not be accepted after June 23, 2025.

The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) is inviting medical professionals to connect with the One Health in Ohio (OHIO) - a statewide network focused on supporting collaboration across human, animal, and environmental health.

State Medical Board of Ohio, Ohio Board of Pharmacy and Ohio Board of Nursing Issue Joint Regulatory Statement on Retail IV Therapy Clinics
In response to the increasing number of retail IV therapy clinics operating in the state, the State Medical Board of Ohio, Ohio Board of Pharmacy, and Ohio Board of Nursing (collectively the “Boards”) issued a joint regulatory statement highlighting critical patient safety concerns and the importance of regulatory compliance in this emerging sector.
The Boards urge all licensed professionals to review their legal responsibilities and confirm compliance with state laws and rules as outlined in the joint regulatory statement.

Scam Alert
Licensees should remain vigilant against new spoofing and extortion scams targeting Ohio providers. Recently, the board has received reports of scammers posing as Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) agents and calling individuals with DEA numbers to request their security pins.
