Human Trafficking Training for Law Enforcement

The State Medical Board of Ohio and the Ohio Human Trafficking Task Force hosted two trainings to help law enforcement agencies recognize human trafficking in illicit massage businesses. To view the press release, click here

Petition period now open for adding new medical marijuana qualifying conditions
The submission period is open from November 1 – December 31. Anyone may submit a petition requesting a condition be added to the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program. If a condition has been previously rejected by the board, the new petition must contain new scientific information that supports the request. Details on the process can be found here.
Journal of Medical Regulation: Physician Mental Health
The Journal of Medical Regulation released an article featuring OPHP’s research on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health and well-being of Ohio's physicians. To read the article, click here
CDC Health Alert: Monkeypox
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health alert update on Monkeypox. Cases have declined since mid-August in the United States; however, new monkeypox cases - including clinically severe cases - continue to occur. While there are currently no treatments specifically approved for monkeypox, therapeutics developed for patients with smallpox have been deployed during the current outbreak.

CDC Health Advisory: RSV
Centers for Disease Control (CDC) Health Alert Network Health Advisory notified healthcare providers about increased respiratory virus activity, especially among children, early in the 2022-23 fall and winter. Co-circulation of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), influenza viruses, SARS-CoV-2, and others could place stress on healthcare systems this fall and winter. This early increase in disease incidence highlights the importance of optimizing respiratory virus prevention and treatment measures, including prompt vaccination and antiviral treatment.

CDC Health Alert: Ebola
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health alert update as a follow-up to the outbreak of Ebola virus disease in Central Uganda. The health update serves to inform public health departments, public health laboratories and clinicians in the U.S. about the ongoing outbreak. 
 
No suspected or confirmed Ebola cases related to this outbreak have been reported in the United States (U.S.) or other countries outside of Uganda to date. The alert is simply a precaution to raise awareness about the potential for new cases.

Ohio Responds Volunteer Registry 
The Ohio Responds Volunteer Registry is the State of Ohio’s online system for managing public health and healthcare professionals who wish to volunteer. If you are would like to volunteer to help the state's efforts, please visit www.ohioresponds.odh.ohio.gov/ to register.

New Transparency Page
This month, the board released an updated Transparency page to provide clear metrics on the output of its complaint and enforcement processes. Among the changes, the board created a new dashboard that reports submitted and closed complaints, citations and settlement agreements, and allegations of licensee misconduct by calendar year. Monthly Formal Action reports include summary descriptions of the disciplinary actions initiated and the disciplinary sanctions imposed by the Medical Board at its monthly meeting. Reports also contain updated information regarding changes in probationary monitoring requirements, reinstatement of licenses following suspension, and status reports of cases on appeal through the courts.

Licensee Obligation to Complete Death Certificates
When an individual dies under natural causes the attending physician is to sign the death certificate within forty-eight hours after the death. Read the Medical Board's policy statement and FAQs here.

The Medical Board's One-bite Program is a non-disciplinary, confidential program for the treatment of impaired licensees and applicants of the Medical Board - established in section 4731.251 of the Revised Code. For more information visit med.ohio.gov and ophp.org.
 
The Medical Board's Confidential Monitoring Program is a non-disciplinary, confidential program for licensees with mental physical conditions impacting ability to practice established in section 4731-28-02 of the Administrative Code.
 
Well-Being CARE Service
The Ohio State Medical Association created a Well-Being Checkup And Referral Engagement Service, which is a free, anonymous checkup of one's mental and emotional health. For more information, click here
